From Disinterest to Dedication: AGILE’s Impact on a Young Girl
Maryam Hassan Asuku, a bright-eyed, determined young girl, is a testament to the transformative power of education. As an SS3 Science student at Government Secondary School Kurmin Mashi in Kaduna State, Maryam’s journey to academic excellence was once fraught with challenges.
Before the intervention of the Adolescent Girls’ Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, the school’s infrastructure was dilapidated, and lack of adequate furniture coupled with a lack of motivation, had dampened Maryam’s enthusiasm for education. She often skipped classes, and her academic performance suffered.
However, the AGILE project brought a breath of fresh air to the school. Renovated classrooms, and provided new furniture and WASH facilities which created a conducive learning environment.
The project’s focus on providing quality education and empowering young girls resonated deeply with Maryam.
One of the most significant impacts of AGILE on Maryam’s life has been the life skills training. The safe spaces-based program has equipped her with essential life skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. She has become more confident, assertive, and engaged in her studies. “The life skills training has changed my life,” Maryam shared. “I am no longer shy to ask questions in class, and I am more focused on my studies.”
Maryam’s newfound motivation and dedication to her studies have made her a role model for her peers. She is now an active participant in school activities, serving as the Assembly Prefect. Her journey from a disinterested student to a passionate learner is a testament to the power of education and the transformative impact of the AGILE project.
Through initiatives like AGILE, Nigeria is taking significant strides to empower young girls and ensure a brighter future for the nation.
